In 2018, we were given the opportunity to purchase the Church and Murdock building located adjacent to our Franklin St. facility, as well as the office building located in the rear of our parking lot. The intent was to make an indoor play space for our children. But after further consideration, we found the building to be in total disrepair.
We believe a new building that houses a gym and a recreation center could serve not only the children of Mom’s House, but also the entire community that has supported our mission for more than 40 years!
The Johnstown area, especially the Roxbury section of town, lacks a large, indoor facility for children of all ages to use. There is not a place for the neighborhood kids to “hang out” after school in the Roxbury section, keeping them off the streets and potentially out of trouble.
There are many services that Mom's House can expand on. Our after school tutoring program can be structured activities. We will offer drug/alcohol prevention and awareness programs, and a nutritional meal to school-aged children.
For families, we would like to offer “movie nights’ with and educational sessions before the show, a community carnival, a community yard sale, an annual Easter egg hunt, a safe Trick or Treat space, a Thanksgiving Dinner, a visit from Santa, and perhaps, a monthly free clothing closet.
Bringing affordable ADULT exercise classes will not only help the health of our community but will also help sustain the programs of the Mom's House Expansion Project. From Zumba, to spinning classes, to Yoga stretching sessions, most needs could be met.
We also acknowledge our aging population in the area, especially across the street from Mom’s House. The beautiful, newly constructed Roxbury Place Apartments will be housing the over 50 population. Socializing supports brain health, slow memory loss, and improves the quality of life. We want to have card parties, low-impact aerobics, art and craft classes, cooking and baking classes, and perhaps a Prom night.
The first floor will house a gym with a basketball court. We recognize that gym time for leagues is a premium and renting out to these groups will again help sustain our center. With a rec room measuring next to the gym, a small kitchen area and restrooms, we can rent out the space for kid’s parties.
The 2nd floor of the rec center can be entered thru the top of the building will be available to the community for civic group meetings, “town hall” meetings, small gatherings and celebrations, and banquets. Etc.
This project is something that is tangible. The Mom's House Expansion Project will be money spent that you can see. This project is a step towards the future of our families and this community. By removing the blight and replacing it with a viable building that can be used to combat drug abuse, provide family entertainment, and improve the value of properties in the area.
